About the club
Malta's first ultimate frisbee club, founded in 2017
Mela Ultimate was founded in 2017 as the first ultimate frisbee club in Malta. Today we're a mixed, multinational club with three weekly sessions and a competitive roster travelling across Europe.
Our story
Building the sport in Malta since 2017
In 2017 a small group of players — some Maltese, some who had arrived on the island weeks earlier — started meeting on a pitch in Attard with a handful of discs and no league to play in. That group became Mela Ultimate, the first ultimate frisbee club Malta had ever had.
Since then, the club has grown to more than 25 active players, added a dedicated competitive training session, and taken rosters to tournaments across Europe. We've built a leadership committee to make sure every new player is looked after and developed, led by founder Richard Hillerström Rundh alongside Head Coach Juan Camilo. Mela has also applied for World Flying Disc Federation grants to keep developing the sport locally.
Ultimate is self-refereed at every level, including our tournaments. That single rule shapes everything about how this club behaves: we call our own fouls, we resolve disagreements ourselves, and we compete hard without needing anyone to keep us honest.

12+ nationalities on one sideline
A large share of our players arrive in Malta for work or study and find the club before they find a flat. Sessions run in English, every session is mixed division, and nobody is ever the only newcomer in the room. If you've just landed on the island, this is one of the fastest ways to meet people.
The Mela Bible
Six core values
The Mela Bible is our written culture document. Every member receives it when they join, and the club reviews it together each season.
- 01
Trust
We trust our teammates, our coaches, and the process — on and off the field.
On the pitch: Trusting that our receiver will catch the disc. Backing a teammate's idea or tactic without second-guessing it.
- 02
Attitude
A great attitude is a choice we make every single time — one that lifts, encourages and inspires teammates to be better.
On the pitch: Staying switched on after a drop. Bringing energy to the last drill and cheering great efforts.
- 03
Commitment
We show up fully, for the team and for our own growth. We commit to the season, the trainings and the goals.
On the pitch: Making training even when it's inconvenient. Following through on a role you took on. Letting the team know whether you're coming.
- 04
Passion
We play because we love it, and that love is visible in how we train and compete — including compassion for the players around us.
On the pitch: Sprinting for a disc that might already be gone. Cheering as loud for a teammate's catch or block.
- 05
Fun
We enjoy the moments, have fun, and enjoy the process we're building together.
On the pitch: Spending time with your teammates and enjoying the time together. Celebrating together, win or lose.
- 06
Discipline
The standards hold whether anyone is watching. We do what we say we are going to do.
On the pitch: Doing the warm-up properly instead of going through the motions. Being on time, every time. Doing your weekly personal training.
Eight standards
The values say who we are. The standards say what we actually do, every session.
- Willing to learn. Stay coachable every session, take the feedback, and ask more questions when you need to.
- Be mindful about big practices and games. Enjoy yourself, but keep alcohol to a minimum before an important training or event.
- Show respect to teammates, coaches, opponents, the game and the practice. If someone talks, everyone listens.
- The “1mm” focus. Get a little bit better every single practice, in skill and in learning new things.
- Courage in communication. Be courageous enough to say what needs to be said, in the moment.
- Empowering. Give feedback in a way that lifts your teammates up — never push anyone down or make them feel bad.
- No excuses. Own it, let it go, and move forward.
- Leave the bad things at home. Nothing is more contagious than bad energy, so show up in a good state of mind, every time.
